Cell phone company question - 8/8/2008 2:19:09 PM

My plan has been up for a while, I need a new cell phone and need advice on what to get.

I have used Verizon for a few years but the reception sucks.  Occasionally I use it in FL and NJ but primarily in Western PA from Pgh north to Erie.  I live in Grove City and have a camp on French Creek near Utica.  Reception at camp is terrible as are most areas along Rt 8. Betwen Franklin and Butler.   In most areas of Franklin, Grove City, Sharon, Erie & Pgh I get great reception but outside those areas its spotty. The Verizon "hear me now" group must have missed Western Pa!

I just get the basic 400 minutes per month plan but who likes what company for reception in Western PA?  Thanks

map of ATT coverage

I have used Nextel, Verizon, Cricket and ATT

ATT's sound quality is much better than the others and coverage is a lot better than Nextel, and Cricket
Not sure about Verizon, I have only used it in cities.

Kayak,

I am in Clearfield Co., moved here from Erie, and use cell as a primary phone.  I travel to Erie, State College, Slippery Rock, Pitt., Buffalo, St. Mary's (God shall forgive me I hope) ,and all point thereafter (lol).  From numerous conversations and experiences, I would tell you to stick with Verizon.  When I first moved here, that was the advice I was given by everyone.  Yes, some areas suck bad for reception, but I know that I can get reception in areas that others (mostly ATT) cannot.  The reverse has never been true.

Just my opinion.  Good luck!

Doc

I have verizon and i have been pleased with it. My contract is up to and I am looking into getting another new phone from them...just don't know which one to get   I kinda like the new Dare they came out with. A girl I am friends with has one and its pretty easy to use. The Voyager she had before it was so junky and problematic that they gave her a dare for free after awhile and some complaining.

I agree with Grendel, stick with Verizon. If you think they're bad, everyone else is worse. All of my friends switch to verizon because they're constantly dropping calls, no service, bad service, roaming, etc. Also, Verizon seems to have better tech support if you need it. What ever you do, STAY AWAY FROM SPRINT!!!

Look for a package deal-you can save a few bucks
Cell, Home phone, internet and TV

This way you will only have one company to hate.

Wow, looks like my current sucky company may have to remain.  Who knows, maybe its my old flip phone getting bad reception.

If I stayed wth Verizon, any phone recommendations?  I can get all kinds of free phones with a two year plan but it has to take a beating and keep on ticking.  I keep it in my back jeans pocket when I bike, fish, travel, etc.  The one I have has a cracked screen from sitting on granite at Yosemite and was in salt water at the Jersey Shore when I fell out of the dam boat but it still works!!  (blame it on the father-in-law boat captain!!)!

Same here, I use a lot of different phones on promos through the events I am involved with.  Verizon is spotty in some places, but not nearly as bad as the others.  My personal phone is verizon.

Kayak,

Not sure this is accurate - but there is a rugged waterproof and i think shockproof phone from verizon - G-one or something like that.  Several students of mine have that one and it will be one I get next.  Currently, I use the LG vx8700 - sort of akin to a Seecamp - a real beauty (shiny metal), but it has to be covered with a lether case.  Got a lambskin off of ebay.

As a note, if you get an EVDO capable phone, and you are in and out of that mode (1X - EVDO) - disable EVDO - it will drain your battery quicker than ____________________________.  Steps on disabling EVDO can be found by googling it.  Doing so certainly enhances battery life.

Thanks for those suggestions guys.  With my renewal I can get the Adventure for free and the Gz for $29.99.  I'm going to watch for one of their stores so I can check them out then I'll probably order online as I get a better deal.  Thanks again!!

Kayak,

Let me know if you get the Gz.  Would like to have another opinion as to how it functions.

Good luck!

Doc,

I decided on Verizon and the GzOne Black/Silver rather than the Adventure.  I liked the Adventure (a friend has one) but this will take more punishment and it's water resistant where the Adventure is not.  Loved the orange model but thought I'd tire of it.  It arrived today and so far so good.  Reception is better than my other phone and it was easy to program.  Not a lot of ringtones.  The compass feature is different but I like it.

I'm headed to the shore tomorrow for some saltwater fishing and will give you another report when I return.

Mike

Thanks Kayak!  I was hoping for a favorable report from you!  As I have said, I know a few students of mine who have it and they rave about it.  I am thinking I will have to get one eventually since a lot of people like to push me into the water.

Enjoy your trip!

Doc

I have the Casio GZ One phone through Verizon.  It's pretty rugged for a cell phone.  I do like it alot.

Kayak99,
You are just going to have move to the westside of Mercer County ie.(Sharon/Hermitage) to get some better reception, LOL!

Cell phones are like women.
It's nice to get one with all the things that you like,
but in a few months you will find one with different features you like even more
.

Right now I have about the simplest one out there because it works, and is low maintenance.
Only problem is that it does not have all the features that I am accustomed to!
