Everytime I go to Cedar Creek to fish for smallmouth I see guys in boats hauling huge musky in. I have no idea how to go about fishing for musky. Any tips, lures, or things I should know? I really want to get a little trolling motor for my cano so I can motor out to where they caught them.

I've caught one from the boat launch using a large cleo a while back. You might try the large hole down below the riffles with some live bait. There's a number of rock bass in that vicinity, and it's legal to use them for bait so long as you catch them with a rod. Never tried it myself, but was giving it some thought.

I'm not familiar with Cedar creek, but if you live bait for musky I'd suggest a quick strike rig.  You get more hook ups and less of  a chance of a deep hook set if you let the ski run with the bait.

Right between Smithton and West Newton.  The park entrance is off of Rt 51 in Rostraver.

MH33... You make it sound so easy.  Really... they haul in huge ones EVERY time?  But to answer you r question you should learn as much about you can about musky fishing before you go after them.  It's safer for you and the fish.  You need the proper equipment (Rod and Reel) and release tools... large net, gloves, hook cutters, pliers, hook outs, etc...  Oh and the most important your camera so you can take a picture and release the beast.

These sites may help...

I forgot to mention the 3 rivers chapter of muskies inc...

http://threerivers.muskiesinc.org/

They meet (monthly) up around Cranberry and do tournaments also.

And there's the butler fishing show which has a toothy critter flavor to it...

Mike,

Thanks for the websites.  There were a couple I hadn't seen before.  I agree it is best to be prepared before trying to handle a Musky.  Once you catch one you are hooked for life.

Dave
