I caught a 10lb carp today in a 4 acre pond . It fought like a tired 4lb bass. Ive caught alot of carp in the rivers that fought much harder. What gives?

They normally are one of the strongest fighters pound for pound in freshwater, aside from smallmouths. Maybe heat or stagnant water was the culprit. Did it look malnourished?

I caught fish after fish yesterday for 2 hours. There was a school of shad that the carp were smashing into and I would jig a white curly tail in the school. Seen this last year too. Caught close to 20 with only 2 snagged. This was below a dam.

Great fight, like catching steels. Biggest was around 28 inches. I,m taking my fly rod this evening. Will try for some pixs.

Went for a few hours today after doing some honey do stuff, like tear out a kitchen cabinet.
There was a gent with his two grandsons there and I gave the youngens some jigs and showed them how to hold it in the froth and they had a ball.
I guess it is the prelude to when my grandson comes(soon). I threw some rapalas and was catching decent size cats.
The little guys called me a magic fisherman.Lol. Never knew I was a magician.
The gent thank me for helping him out and was going to charge me for the entertainment.Lol

Fresh water reds!!!! tough to catch on the fly. Spooky, smart....not only can they hear you talk, they now what you are saying. They elude me more often than not. They are truly a sport fish. Hard to catch, hard to land and hard not to like. By the way they can pull a kayak pretty fast. I would like to make a trot line for about a dozen carp and then hook the whole thing to the front of the yak, then crack the tip of my flyrod on the lead carps back and hang on...

that sounds quite odd

I would say the pond had alot to do with it....

the only carp i have ever caught would usually take off straight downstream about half way across the susquehanna river in Clearfield county

of course i was only using 6lb test with a 5'5" ugly stick rod

they are about the only fish worth catching in that river that put up a decent fight....

It really depends on the fish. I have had small ones that fight very very hard and I have had some very large ones not fight much at all. Each one is different and I can't tell how large they are anymore judging from the fight because it varies so much.

And make sure you pay attention to your rod so it doesn't get drug away from a sudden run.....

I was doing some float fishing fer carp at a small lake Thur. and caught a few.  The first one I caught was the biggest (at least 15 lbs.), a light-colored carp and after an initial short run, didn't put up much of a fight.  The other two were smaller (9 and 11 lbs. or so) and darker colored and fought much better---lotsa fun using 6lb. test line and a 10.5 ft. steelhead rod.  It seems the dark carp always put up a good fight no matter where caught---paylakes or wild water.  This time of year with the warmer water, carp can be more sluggish in fight and dog it, especially in lakes with stagnant water that has less oxygen than river water. Most river carp usually put up a good fight.  Sometimes it comes down to each individual carp being different accounting for the variance in fight.  Still, carp pretty much put up a better fight overall than anything else with fins in freshwater.

Just got back from one of the local rivers. Got a nice carp about 10+ and some large perch. This carp fought great, 6lb test, 6 ft ugly stick med-light rod, what a blast. I have been trying the english method for some time now and it works. I used a bolt and hair rig. On the hair rig I used dough . I found out that by using a small peice of cork to keep the dough off the bottom was the trick. The fish just hooked himself just like he should have. I had the rod in a rod holder with the drag very ,very loose.(would have broke and ugly stick). THis fish ran, and ran, and ran. Dark too, maybe your on to something pacarper. I hope to get the 20lb plus carp I see all the time. Hard bastards to catch.

I use the same setup for local trout, largemouth, carp, perch, hell just about anything. In the fall I use it for stripers, but after getting spooled last year I think Ill move up to 8lb. It has to be the best setup for most fishing except steelhead, I need the longer rod to keep my line off the water.

yeah i also use the same combo for the small stream and creek fishing around school and back home

i even used it last year for steelhead because i do not have the right fly fishing gear

they were interesting fights,  def better than carp but i did land about 4 the one day we went up i think..
