I recently ordered a new wooden seat for my canoe. The wood is untreated. I believe its Ash. Anyhow, I was wondering what type of stain I should use to preserve it and keep it from rotting. The stain has to be durable, because I beat the hell out of this boat. I have some left over Sikkens. Would that work? Thanks.

Not an expert here but , I believe if you stain it for whatever color your looking for and then apply 2 to 3 light coats of clear lacquer polyurethane coating to protect it. Or something like Thompson s water sealer would work just fine. All you want is to keep water and stuff from penetrating the wood and making it rot. After a few uses test the finish to see if water beads up and rolls off. If not apply finish till it does. My 2 cents. Hope this helps.

The Sikkens will work fine, its a quality product if applied correctly, other wise it has a tendency to peel. I prefer to use CWF by the Flood Co., it's a great high quality sealer also. I use it on all my wood sealing jobs, you can buy it at Lowes Or Home Depot, it last 3 -5 years on decks and siding depending on the amount of sun and weather it gets . Stay away from the Thompsons

get a can of herculiner (like rhino linings) and paint that on.... water and chemical resistant for many years.

haha, sure, it will be black and you lose sight of the wood, but it'll work. Mix some sand in it first and you have the ultimate no-slip canoe surface.

That's how we do it in Hi Class Hillbilly country!!!!

SPAR URATHANE.... It is used in marine applications and is super durable. Protects from UV and rain. I just refurbed my boat and all exposed wood got 4-5 coats of spar. just lightly sand with fine steelwool between coats and the finish will turn out awesome.

They do make marine grade sealers, oil based stains (although banned in Pa) last along time
Sikkens is good stuff and should work just fine
