Looks like numbers to produce a strong year class. It will be interesting to see what type of catch rate next Spring will yield.

Well that is good news....

Now, why would they not bring the minimum size up to say 18"?  At least for a few years to let them gain some extra size and to let the others hit 15" and then maybe change the minimum back?

Before I get flamed, and really I don't care if I do, I am really just curious....where, really truley would the harm be?

If they would stop a certain group of fisherpeople from keeping everything they catch, regardless of size, the eyes would be back to a decent size by 2010. Personally, i've been checked everytime i fished linesville after March, but i've NEVER seen them check the fisherpeople.

Good Point Chauncy! I have never witnessed it myself, but was told by others that if it is caught it is kept! PANFISH, I would go for that!

i have witnessed it many times.  once they start hitting, they use cell phones to call in the troops.  really a shame, as i have seen three legal and three sub legal fish on a stringer.  they know the rules.  chaunc, you're right about this.

That rule can go for all,I've seen with my own eyes about the great shenego king, have small 8 inch crappies on the ice. Don't blame one group,I know there bad,but if you can get giant slabs all spring Why would you keep 8 inchers in the winter?

Tuna man, they dont have a size limit on crappies, like walleyes, do they? Do or say what you must to justify what you do. But were they legal? If i did keep 8" iced crappies, i probably ate them that day. No need to put them in the freezer cause i catch these in the fall.

eight inch crappies eat just like ten inchers.  hey chaunc,  remember some of those mosquito lake crappies, eight inches and as fat as heck?  last year those fish had shoulders on them bigtime.

Those 8"ers eat good but dont freeze well. A couple more days like this and my freezer should be stocked. That is, if my kids dont fish my freezer. Got these today.

HEY.... maybe i'd better stop keeping these fish, seeing that all the crappies in the lake are coming to this one area that i fish.

Are those fish worth cleaning? I'm asking a serious question. I've thrown all the Crappie under 11 or 12 inches back I've caught in the past. I hardly ever catch any big ones through the ice at Lake Arthur although I did catch one 16 1/2 inches 3.2 pounds 2 years ago. Got that one on the wall not in my belly! I noticed the crappie in Pymy this year were alot smaller than we usually catch there. I think we kept 2 out of a couple hundred. Most of the Crappies we caught up there in the past were 12-14 inches with a few larger.

Fathead, my personal limit for crappie is 10"+ unless they're deep hooked.  By the time they get to 10" or so they seem to grow shoulders and get a decent filet.  I don't begrudge people who keep 8 or 9 inchers because it's legal, however, I often see guys keeping 5-7 inchers and wonder about their rationale.  I fish Chautauqua a lot and they have a 9" minimum in all of NY state...I wish PA would adopt the same policy.

my biggest was a shade under 18 inches, from a hillsville quarry, but wasn't close to 3 pounds.  had a mouth bigger than my sister in law, though.

I've caught 2 over 17"...both out of Edinboro back when Edinboro was hot.  One ice fishing, the other in the spring in the fingers.

Mine looked a little different trees were not green and the water was hard! I didn't take pictures but I will when Higgins Taxidermy gets it back to me which should be real soon. It amazed me when I weighed that fish! My buddie got one mounted that was almost as long but 1.75 pounds. Was that Lake Wilhelm? I caught mine at Arthur. Nice fish Chauncy
