I'm hoping somebody who knows birds can help with this.  About 2 weeks ago I launched at Cedar creek and saw 2 birds across from the launch that I've never seen before.  They looked a lot like the blue heron but they were all white.  The main difference I noticed was how they took off and flew in circular patterns and went pretty high in the sky.  Most of the blue herons that I encounter on the river will just stay low and fly far enough away until they're comfortable.

Hope somebody knows about these and even see's them as well... they were beautiful and cool to watch in the sky.

Thanks

My first thought was "snowy egrets".  But I guess in PA, a better bet is the Great Egret.

I agree. Best bet is a migrating Great Egret. Saw a number of them last year about this time. They don't breed in western PA but do migrate through in spring and fall. All white with black legs.

Thanks, that's probably it.  It's the first time I saw them so wasn't sure what it was.  Hopefully they'll return sometime.

I saw one of these gobble down a Bullfrog (Very Large 2 fisted sized) while working in the Burbs of Chicago a few years ago ,it took him 20 minutes but he ate the whole thing .It must of been real hungry.

Saw what looked to be a hawk with a fish in it's talons flying over the river down in Smithton last Saturday.  Looked really cool but I didn't know hawks fished.

I have seen a Bald Eagle in my yard using 12x Binoculars circling bout a mile high. There is a nest somewhere in westmoreland county so said  Tribune Review, an eagle can have a large range in which they hunt.
Could of been an Osprey also

What you saw were swans. Had them do the same thing above my house. They circle till they get high enough and continue on there way north.

That was an osprey you saw at Smithton. They have been here for quite a few years and have never bought a button to the club. It's really something to see them hit the water and come up w/ a fish. Watched one do that right behind my buddy at Eureka and he about jumped out of his waders.
We're all wondering what that black and white duck is flying around the river at Smithton.

That Black and White duck will be dead if he makes it to duck season Youghman.  Them Smithton boys have a bounty on that duck.
