Been having an issue with swivels breaking, using a #2 barrel swivel and have had a couple break at the barrel. Both were in the boat after netting an eye, but I can't trust them now. I almost exclusively fish with dipseys so there are several swivels involved. What brand and size are you using?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I use sampo. For my downrigger outfits, I use the 45 lb test sampos. they're not cheap, but they last a long time. Nothing worse than losing a nice fish to cheap tackle.

Sampo or any other "ball bearing" swivel is way better than those barrel swivels....you'll see, you get what you pay for.  Don't ever skimp on your weakest point.

I got some from sportsmans warehouse 2 months ago...not entirely sure of who makes them but they are cross lock ball bearing swivels with welded rings.  120lb breaking strength...they are solid...i like them better than the sampos.  I changed my #3 sampos to being used for the occasional spoon off of the dipsy rig.

Any ( ball bearing ) swivel that cost you atleast .80 - 1.00 a piece will suffice . Like said earlier you get what you pay for....

Berkley ball bearings are good.

The above mentioned are hard to beat but if youre looking for something different try Gander mtn.  In their black magic series they have one that looks a lil like a bead chain swivel but I dont think they call it that.  (Sorry can't remember their name at the time)  They stand up great even on my 100lb line catfish setup.

Most all ball bearing swivels are in another class compared to barrel swivels. I wouldn't use a barrel swivel for anything but panfish, perch, or smaller trout. Dream Catcher is right.... you'll know you have the right ones when you end up paying about $1 each.  Berkley, Cabela's, Gander Mtn all make good ones and I've used tons of Sampo's for muskie and walleye and have never had a failure. I also prefer one piece welded rings as opposed to the regular spit rings but they aren't necessary for walleyes. That's just an old habit from chasing muskies for half my life. Good luck Bulldog.... now out to try the Blue Magic.

Dreamweaver started making a crosslock swivel for $1 each that are good but I think the sampos are still better, worth $2 each better? Doubt it but I like them better

Ok, I will next time.  The lure shown is the same one I was using.  Got it to the boat but could not get it in the net so got down on me knees "on a pontoon" and tried to grab it behind the head.  That's when I thought my line broke, but it was the swivel.

Aw man! That looks like a flat out tackle failure there. It doesn't look like the construction or weight rating was the problem. When that happens they either straighten out or pop at the swivel. It looks like the wire on that one just plain snapped. Never saw that before. Could have just been a one time defect.
