I do not have a clue if this is actually true, but it is a good story....  Enjoy.

BEST LAWYER/INSURANCE STORY OF THE YEAR, DECADE, AND POSSIBLY THE CENTURY.

This took place in Charlotte North Carolina.

A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against, among other things, fire.

Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars, the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company.

In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost 'in a series of small fires.'

The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion.

The lawyer sued and WON!

(Stay with me.)

Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous.. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company, in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable 'fire' and was obligated to pay the claim.

Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the cigars that perished in the 'fires'.

NOW FOR THE BEST PART...

After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!!!

With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine.

This true story won First Place in last year's Criminal Lawyers Award Contest. rg

ONLY IN AMERICA

NO WONDER THE REST OF THE WORLD THINKS WE'RE NUTS

An attorney was questioning a police officer in court. The exchange went like this.

Attorney: So how do you know these facts are true?
Police Officer: A fellow police officer told me.
A: Do you trust your fellow police officers?
PO: Yes. With my life.
A: Tell me this. Do you have a locker room?
PO: Yes.
A: And do you have a locker in there?
PO: Yes.
A: And on this locker, do you have a padlock?
PO: Yes.
A: Well, if you trust your fellow officers so much, why do you have a lock?
PO: Well you see, the locker room is located between the front door and the court room. Sometimes attorneys take a short cut through there.

Yes, all lawyers are scumbage defense attorney / frivalous lawsuit seekers...

For how so many on this site are all about upholding the constitution, once one studies it in detail (earning a constitutional law degree) they are then looked upon as if they are Edgar Snyder???  I really don't get it.  Being a lawyer is like being an engineer.  Not every engineer designs skyscrapers, and not every lawyer is out to make money legally scamming others.  There are many lawyers out there, that are public servants looking out for the best interest of the ordinary Joe.  There are definitely scumbag lawyers representing us in DC, but I wouldn't assume they are scumbags just because they are lawyers though.  There are many career politicians out there, that have no knowledge of our constitution / laws ect., but make a nice living off of our tax dollars due to their name recognition, trustworthy smile, or nice legs...

This thread was not an indictment of all lawyers.  I have three lawyers in my family and they are not scumbags.  One was a public defender for many years until a massive stroke ended his career.   I think the main point of the story was that even if you think you can beat the system, watch out there is always a twist you had not thought of.  It is a cautionary tale.

Best to take most of the FWDs that you get with a grain of salt as most of the too good to be true stories are just that. You can check most of these urban legends on (SNOPES.COM) to see if they are true.    sam

I have no faith in snopes any longer after looking things up and reading their sources for making their claims on issues. It has to do with politics and I'll leave it at that.

For the record, I also believe there are good honest hard working lawyers outhere somewhere.
