I am planning on trying some Berkley Vanish for Steelhead. Did any of you guys use it or have any luck with it?

I have used it and would not recommend it.  I prefer McCoy Mean Green.  Good line and not expensive.

I love it.  I've been using it for 2 seasons now and have had great results with it.  Most everyone on this board hates it but as long as I keep catching fish on it, I'll keep using it.

By the way I did some math last week and I caught and landed 98 steelhead on one single spool of Berkely Vanish 4#.  That's all the proof I need!

Not for steel.  I use 2# Vanish on my ultralight for trout and panfish and I love it for April-September, but in cold weather, it'll make you hate it.  Also, from what I can tell, once you get much heavier than 2-6# it gets unruly.

All of the fluorocarbon lines get a bit touchy in the cold and I honestly do not think they hold up well in the streams.  The shale bottoms and gravel are very rough on leader material and you need to change it up a lot.

I'm done with all Berkley line. It's all crap in my opinion. I went through 2 spools of 6lb(XT and Sooth Casting) this summer fishing for smallmouth and I'd get a couple hours in and then get nothing but birds nests. Switched the line and haven't had a problem since.

I would not use it below 40 degrees. There's a whole thread on this
somewhere.

Ace, a few things can cause twisted/bird nests in line.
if they ALL twist for you, it's likely something you're doing.

examples of what causes problems;

1.) some lures with out a swivel will twist line  up bad.

2.) reeling against the drag.
(when you have a fish on and  crank the reel, but aren't winding in line.
If you're cranking and not retrieving line, you're just twisting the line  like a cork screw

3.) spooling line on the reel wrong.
to spool a spinning reel right, lay the spool flat, give a have dozen or so cranks on the reel, stop, then dip the tip toward the spool.
if the  line curls/twists on it's self big time, turn the spool over.
One way or the other you'll have much  less twist when you dip the rod tip towards the spool.
Try it, and it will be obvious which way has less twist.

Here's a helpful hint about spooling:

Try soaking the spool of line in room temperature water for about 20 minutes before you put it on. It makes the line more limp and goes on nicely. It has drastically reduced the times my reel lashed. I had the same problem (with Berkly line) last year, and spent a lot of time angry emailing their company about the "birdsnests" and they told me that trick. I've been doing it ever since.

I've used, its great when out of the box, but tends to fail when it gets old (after a year).  Have never had a problem in the cold, but I think its hit or miss.  If someone suggest something better(like bug did) I would try it instead.

I change my line way more than once a year, like once a month. Not being a smart *ss, but in my "non professional" opinion....A year is way too long.

Great advice Bug...It doesn't matter, a nick is all that separates good from bad. If line diameter is the issue and thin is the order of the day then expect to change often to avoid breakoffs. I used 6lb vanish forever and had little trouble, a friend uses 6lb P-line for tippet materal and swears by it. Bottm line is you have to check your tippet.
Suspending bait on a float at the Elk access will not abrase tippet or line, fishing fast water will beat it up in a few drifts....so it comes down to style of fishing also. Buy a spool, it will not hurt to try it.

I have used Berkely vanish for the past 4 years, with good success.  The problem I've had is that as it gets older, it seems to "age.  I don't mean the stuff on the reel, I mean unused stuff on the spool.  Weird, I know, but I pulled out some from a spool I hadn't used yet that I bought last year, and it didn't perform well.  But as for breakoffs, etc, I've not had much of an issue.

I've been using it for yrs just as a leader, and have caught many a fish.
Just keep your favorite line on the reel. (same lb rating)
A simple surgeon's knot (wet it) ties on to your favorite line,
and when you get a snag, it usually just breaks at the leader.
It does get brittle in cold weather though.

I use Vanish as tippet material for fly fishing, I was referring to the spool of Vanish going bad.  I change my tippet every time I fish and several times while fishing.  Usually because I get snagged in a tree.

Geniemans reasons for twist are right on and most important is spooling on new line there is a right way and a wrong way, the right way is to look at your reel from the front to determine which way the line is being wound on, and place new spool (flat) on the floor and have it come off in the opposite direction, in other words if line goes on reel clockwise it must come of spool in a counterclockwise direction and vice versa I thread the new line through the guide closest to the reel and hold that guide straight up above the spool which is flat on the floor and pinch it to have it go on tight. Label up or Label down depending on which way it is going on you reel

Another tip for spinners...To reduce line twist always close your bail manually(simultaneously)as it closes on its own. By following the bail to the seat you tend to eliminate loops. While your hand is already in position, pull the line taunt at the reel to be sure there are no loops.
