they work.  Use blue or purple.

yes, that is loudmouth frank

I can attest to this statement as well, he and his friend were putting the smack down on them with these.

I think you are referring to the Gulp minnows...I have used the 2" ones on wallleye, perch and bass with good luck..never tried them yet for trout or steelies. The liquid they come in gets real stinky real fast.

Haha...I have some of the 2.5" gulp minnows. I use em to drop-shot for bass but will have to try em on steel this weekend. Screamin is right, though, they reel to high heaven. I spilled some juice from gulp worms in my trunk, and it stunk in there forever. I thought the smell would fade away in time. A month later I just scrubbed the hell out of it. Still stunk for a few weeks.

Are they very different? Look almost identical, except for the eyes. Although 2 softbaits could look identical and be very different.

I use live medium sized fathead minnows, strung onto the line with a needle and then a size 12 or 14 triple hook.  This has worked well for me ever since I have been coming up to the tribs.

I don't see the point in using a fake minnow or a fake worm when you could just use the real thing.  If you miss any strikes, the real ones will entice them to bit again.  You might not get that second or third bite using something fake.

Most people like to hook the minnow in the back or in the lip and drift it.  However I think it's much more productive to string them onto your line with a needle and work them through the water at the same speed as the current.

I have a ziplock bag of the gulp minnows in the garage. It spent all summer in the car. They are no less effective than the day I bought em.

Cold, but what does that have to do with them being better/worse than live minnows?

I never said that the fake minnows would become less effective over time.  I said that they were just less effective in general compare to the real thing.

And I never said they werent. What you really said was that you dont see the point of using it. Looking at it from a pure realism perspective there is no point. You cant get realer than the actual thing.

But looking at the big picture, the point of using it is that the artifical baits are more convenient, long lasting, portable, and durable than their living antecedents. It's certainly a tradeoff, in most cases, I think a live minnow would probably outfish a fake or dead one, but for me, its a tradeoff I'm willing to make. I only fish stuff like that a handful of times a year, and it isnt worth it for me to make arrangements to bring live bait along every time I think I might want to use it. Far simpler, again, for me, to use the soft baits.

Live minnows are a hassle, treble hooks are not needed in any Erie tributary either.

These things def work good and are easy to manage.

I often use the berkley power minnows. They are dependable in all conditions of water. I hooked a few steel on them under the float last season on Elk creek. I prefer the live golden shiners. The power minnows are my choice when fishing PA Delayed Harvest Waters. This bait produces many rainbow and brook trout for me.

im not sure the berkely minnow is worth the extra money, they say it outfishes all other baits but i'd disagree. I tried them when fish were crushing live minnows and never had a taker. Sure live minnows are a hassle sometimes but the "quick minnow" container has made that problem much better. And watsup with all the shiners they're selling at the bait shops now?! they die after the first cast.. is there anywhere to buy fatheads anymore?

Sometimes the steel don't care if your shiner is dead. As long as you can keep it on a nice dragless drift they will still eat the offering. Other times I ust the dead ones like a streamer and swing them. Have had some impressive hits.

I can't attest to their success with steelhead, but for smallies and walleye they definitely work well. I've used the natural black and silver and firetiger. I would imagine they could be used on a small jighead or swung thru a pool for success. Gulp minnows also flat out work too.

Is this thread about steelhead or Crappie?  Please catch your big numbers of fish then evolve like the rest of us.   Before you do try a piece of sponge or nerfball, deadly

these work great! i actually caught a snapped line, pulled it in and ended up with one of these jig-head intact and all.

tied it on my leader and hooked a big male on the 7-8th cast..

during the fight the rubber minnie fell off and that was that.

bought a bag the next day (apprx $5) - surprisingly they work great.

I use the Berkley BLadeDancer Minnow version b/c it has a twister tail. I like to think the tail gives extra action that the steelies cannot resist. I pounded fish on them and was greatly outcatching all at the hole but two guys with fly rods. I use the black/silver ones with the foil in the middle. Hook a jig head on them, or a long shank hook with a slip sinker on front and let it drift.

My only complaint is that the material is pretty soft and I had a real tough time getting more than 2 hard hits on one before the material tore and the hook wouldn't stay in.
