Anyone ever use a Berkley Cherrywood rod before? IF so, do you like or dislike them and why? Was thinking about getting one and wanted to know a pro's opinion. It would cost me about $20 and I would use it both for perch and bass fishing from shore. Thank you for all your suggestions.

Some of the early ones weren't bad for the money but the newer ones have a bad rep for easy breaking from what I've heard.  I've had an old one for like ever and it still catches fish 9'/5 wt.  But I bought a newer one and it broke right in front of the ferrule.  I agree buy an uglystick or a Shakespeare kit if you want to go cheap.

Had one a while back.  It snapped in the first month.  I exchanged it for a new and that one snapped to.

Never cared much for them.  Always felt they were bottom of the line in the Berkley line of rods.  I would take an Onyx, Grayphite, or Lightning rod any day of the week from Berkley over the Cherrywood.  In the same price range and about the same time frame when Cherrywoods were popular, you could get Kunan's (later H&H) for the same money and they were 5 times the rod.

Fish, I also agree, they are junk.Save your money and headaches to get a better quality. IM6 lower end rods are pretty good and about $70-$100.

If he's looking to buy a cherrywood, there's no way he wants to spend that kind of money. Get an uglystick or lightning rod.

Hey fishon4me,

If you plan on fishing for many years to come and if you can afford it i suggest buying a high end well made quality rod with a lifetime warranty. the last rods i have bought were in the 90s with life time warranties on them save the reciepts and remmember where you bought them, the warranty entitles you to a new rod, at no cost if anything were to happen to the first one. i havent bought a new rod in 12 years. i have however got 2 new rods at no cost to me due to the lifetime warranty. i have a 10'6" st. croix fly rod and a 11' courtland noodlerod both were dammaged a some point in time in the span of 12 years and new ones cost me nothing. both were bought at poor richards and im sure if you ask them they will not stear you wrong in which rod will best suit your needs.

I have had 3 in the past couple of years.  First one broke got it replaced and that one broke also.  They are weak at the tips.  Don't waste your money.

I had a 4 wt flyrod I used once or twice, it was a little too "whippy" for my liking and I bought a stiffer replacement and actually passed the flyrod on to a friend of mine.  It wasn't a bad rod, caught a few nice trout on it, but felt the need for an upgrade all the same.

Seriously???  Those might be the ugliest, worst feeling rods ever made.  They might be ok for fishing bait, but there is no chance I would ever recommend one of those to someone looking for a flyrod or any other model that they were made in.  I'm not criticizing... I'm just saying...

I got 2 of them about 10 years ago and both are in excellent condition, but a couple buddies of mine have had bad luck with both the spin rods and fly rods, newer rods thought.......

I'll agree with those who said to go with the lightning rods instead of the cherrywoods.  I don't normally buy el cheapo rods, but my son tends to break everything he gets his hands on....so I've bought some cheap ones over the last few years so he doesn't break any St. Croix rods.  Cherrywoods are not only cheaply made, you might as well whittle a rod out of redbrush, the action and sensitivity are about the same.  Lightning rods on the other hand seem to be well built, and although they don't have the action or sensitivity of an expensive rod, I'm impressed with their performance for the price...definately a good bang for the buck.
