One of the consequences of our higher gas prices is quite a few people making the move to the 2-wheelers for the first time in their lives.   The real downside is that we now have a lot of inexperienced bikers on the road.   It seems every day in the newspaper there is another motorcycle accident.  Last week I saw one following a car too close.   The car had to stop for other traffic and the biker had to swerve into the oncoming lane to avoid a collision.  Luckily no traffic was coming the other way.   On Saturday a motorcycle T-boned a PT Cruiser less than a mile from my house.  In this case I think the cruiser pulled out from a stop sign and did not see the biker coming up the road.   Too many eyes look for a car or larger and don't pick up on the approaching bike.  Both vehicles caught fire and burned to shells.  Stay alert out there.

There are a lot more bikes out there this year it seems, and with more bikes on the road, you have more idiots on bikes. I can't tell you how many times I see idiots on bikes doing wheelies, weaving in and out of traffic, or going nearly 100mph passing cars on major highways.

I know there are plenty of people who are doing nothing wrong, and get into an accident with another vehicle, but I believe more motorcycle accidents are caused by careless riders, than careless drivers. Oh well, Edgar Snyder and Associates are always there to protect them....

now lets bash the bikers,i been riding for 30+ yrs,and i will tell you from first hand experiance,96% of all accidents involving a bike and car is caused by carelessness on the 4 wheeled vehicle, a driver in a car or truck that says they didnt see or hear the bike is the biggest excuse out there, how do you not see a big headlight that is always on,or a cruiser bike, which i have ,,, i was in accident last june, broke both wrists ,broke nose, and fractured knee and hip, plus many other abrasions, due to stupidity by a 22 yr old coming out of a car lot onto a 4 lane highway without stopping or looking,,,, when i sued,my insurance gave me them figures above from a national insurance slate,,,  except for them nuts on sport bikes,(ninja type zoom and splats ,we like to call them), most bikers are alert and always scanning the roadways, any police data or insurance data will back them figures up,, its going around states now that to pass a drivers test for a 4 wheel vehicle, you are being required to take a bike awareness course to pass

What gets me are those riding bikes without helmets?  A 30 mph "fender bender" in a car, is about $200k in hospital bills split amongst the insurance paying public from a helmetless biker.  I'm fine with the no helmet law, since common sense shouldn't need a law.  I think any accident involving a biker without a helmet should not be covered by insurance or tax payers.  You can substitute riding motorcycles without a helmet and smoking cigarettes for my thoughts on that issue as well.  I'd love to see the amount of tax dollars spent on healthcare for these two acts of selfishness to basically look cool???

well riding without helmet is a pesonal choice, same as seat belts are and should be, as far as insurance not being paid well that will open up a bunch of worms also,, thats like saying a school bus accident shouldnt be covered either cause the children dont wear seatbelts, or you out hunting and get shot by some idiot ,and insurance says you arent covered cause you werent wearing a bullet proof vest,,   you right tho ,it is common sense, but where do you draw that line,

Yeah, I guess you are right on where to draw the line.  I'd rather see the money go to someones hospital bills than to the insurance company's CEO.  Which would likely be the case if they made a rule like this.  Rates would be the same, but coverage cut.  Seems like what they try to do already.  Although, Bonehead Schneider and Ass. probably have something to do with that.

NO DOUBT PORK, i often think about that on those school buses, i asked a magistrate once why it isnt enforced with all these kids onboard, and he says it has been brought up,but then the responsibility getting them off if a fire or rollover happened,, could look at both ways i guess, now the bus driver needs one on,like i said i use common sense and wear my helmet on bike,MOST of time, but there are those days i have brain fade and dont, thats my stupidity tho,,,

Never thought about that end of things...but honestly, I think if there was enough push for this (no-brainer, to me) safety move, they could have a sensor that if the bus wasn't upright for more than 10 seconds, the belts would all disengage.  Temp sensor for the fire, as well as an automatic cutout switch up front for the driver to unfasten every belt.

I'm sure its not that simple, but from the time I was riding one I always thought it was a bit hypocritical for the school system to teach students to always buckle up...except on your way there and back, when you CAN'T.

Rock and Pork,
When I rode I ALWAYS wore my helmet.   And It was a bell; one of the type that was approved for all types of racing up to sprint car and top fuel.  Because it was the only one I had.  It caused some comments but I never suffered any head injuries.  Looked like a big hard - boiled egg.

Ahhh yes, one of my favorite topics. What I love is you titled your post "Be Wary of Motorcycles", but what you pointed out were all idiot moves made by cyclists themselves.

Here's a letter to the editor I wrote in the Erie Times....it sums up the way I feel

SCOTTIE,THE INCIDENT YOU REFERED TO,I DONT DOUBT IT, but that is not the norm for most bikers, you always have them few,as far as seeing a bike, how not with at least 1 car size headlight, some have a lite bar with headlight, and 2 spotlights,if you are paying attention very easy to spot a bike, hell i have cars cut me off everyday on inter.79&70, and scott,if you are the one who i think you are in a sprint, better cut your comments short when it comes to cutting someone off

Loud pipes save lives!
The Vance and Hines pipes on my heavily modified VMAX made it sound like a small block Chevy with headers and a cherry bomb.
The exhaust on my FLH had S&S pipes

And you can hear my Checkmate coming from a few miles away.

WHAT?

There should be a limit as to how loud any vehicle can be. Maybe there is something like that in place now, but it doesn't seem that way. Any night I sit in my backyard to play cards with friends or visit with my girlfriend, motorcycles will cruise down my street and we can't even hear each other talk until they're gone. It is a public nuisance.

Something that i've always noticed when having this arguement is motocycle riders NEVER seem to admit that accidents on bikes are often caused by careless riders. My friends who ride blame everything else for the high number of motorcycle accidents, like....poor road maintenence, unbanked turns, cars, deer, groundhogs, racoons, possums, gravel....the list could go on forever. A few things you'll never hear them mention are poor judgement, showing off, riding too fast, or chance.

In those cases where cars do pull out in front of motorcycles, do any of you think the driver of the car was just a poor driver anyway, and probably would have pulled out in front of any vehicle? Think about it, it happens all the time that people pull out in front of other cars, and even tractor trailers. An elderly woman pulled out in front of me last november, my car was totalled, yet nobody was hurt. If she would have pulled out in front of a motorcycle, the local riders all would have said, "people need to start watching for motorcyles".

WELL,YOU GUYS ARE BASICALLY REFERING TO SPORT BIKES,CAUSE MOST RIDERS ON ANY TYPE OF CRUISER ,TOURER,are more cautious and yes it is most the 4 wheeler who causes the accident,,look at insurance and police reports, they will quote what i just said,, most riders on bike dont feel they are invincible as most in a car and 4 wheel drive pickups, i ride my bike almost daily up 79 and 70 to and from work,i am cut off several dozen times by speeders and pickups that feel they own the highway, now thes young kids on these zoom and splats are less cautious,i guess they love the risk of death and speed

Ohhhhh no. Read that link I posted. I specifically mentioned the two riders where on Harley's, and they just happened to be pulling out of the biking kingdom in Erie, the Harley store on W 26th.

It is a law in many jurisdictions but it is hard to prove since the decibel meters are handhelds(most are not even trained on the meter nor do the agencies have sufficient funds to get many qualified for it) and the bike has to be going at speed with RPMs up. Idle usually doesn't make it hold up in court after the officer pulls them over. Same holds true for the loud bass in cars.

now lets complain about noise from bikes,, maybe we should do away with the sirens also on emergency vehicles,,jet noises around airports, train whistles at crossings after 10 pm,cant sleep,, there again , where is the stopping point of making more govt control laws
