I've been catching them consistently from a pond nearby since mid to late March.  It's my testing ground, because the fish there are more forgiving of less-than-perfect technique.   Once I get something working in that pond, I'll try it out at a bigger lake.

But yes, the bass are ready when you are.

just like steelhead fishing you can bass as early or late as you want within reason.  i started catching bass from a small lake about 3000 feet in the wv mountains first week of april.  first trip was only 2 or 3 fish i cant remember, but one was over 5 lbs.  another 5 and an 8 since then.  ponds warm earlier than bigger lakes, in college i fished a few near slippery rock starting in early march.  used to use a 1/8 black spinner the first month and wear out the ultralight on bass until trout season started.  just like saying that steelhead CAN be caught in the erie tribs from august till may (and ive heard even the months in between) you CAN start catching bass in march and not stop till the first snowstorm.  then just wait a few weeks for ice and its back on.

most fishermen focus their fishing each year on peak times for different species and we pick a couple of species to focus even more time on before and after those peak times, and even then we could be spending even more time catching that fish.  there is pretty much a way to catch any fish in this state at any time of the year.

in terms of bass, they like us get real tired of winter.  when we think a 50 degree day is nice in march, they do to.  in smaller waters they do become active.  in bigger waters hit spawning sites and you'd be surprised how many early birds will be there in what may seem like a lifeless lake.

so right you are cooler, i have never run into those tough postspawn conditions that they talk about on tv so much (not that you should listen or watch anything they do).  once the spawn is over it can be some of the easiest fishing of the year.  quality may not be as good as the spring but quantiy skyrockets with the right presentations.  short plasics with a single split shot quietly glided over weeds in 8-13 feet of water (not far from where they were spawning in the spring) can absolutely put 50 bass in the boat.  and there were 2-3 weeks where it was many more than that last year after the spawn.

i would say its not post spawn thats tough but the transition from post spawn to summer behavior that may provide more of a challenge.  post post spawn...or something like that.  they may not be in the adjacent areas like post spawn but may not be on the deep structure yet.

I've caught quality and quantity in March after ice out and in October.  Alot of bass and alot of big ones.  But June is one of the most consistent producers, give me a gloomy, overcast day with a constant threat of rain or an occasional shower in June (don't confuse this with a cold front, you don't want that) and a pack of berkley power worms or soft shelled crabs and it's hard to beat.
