I've only ever fished for trout, just recently started crappie fishing.  What's the rules for summer bass fishing?  Once the spring season ends can you still fish for bass as long as you release them?  If so does anyone know any good spots in SW PA?

Yeah, bass fishing is legal all year if you catch and release them. Read the rule book for special regulations and waters that are under the Big Bass program. What type of bass are you fishing for? Let me know and ill let you in on a few good spots.

Large or small mouth.  I caught a couple little large at Loyalhanna last weekend but was mainly fishing for crappie.  I used to have decent luck at Mammoth but it seems like that place has gone downhill.  Any help would be much appreciated Hoops.

Well, whenever I want to hook into some smallies, I fish on the Yough. I have a canoe that I launch further upstream and drift down to Cedar Creek Park. I always do good (smallies between 10-15 inches, but I've seen some in the 18 inch range). If you are wading, Cedar Creek itself is a good access area. Also, the whole time I'm fishing, I never take off a yellow Rooster tail spinnner.
Largemouth are a little harder around here, but your best luck for largemouth near here is the rivers. Now, to really catch alot of fish in the rivers, you need to know where they are. Its tough fishing, but once you put together the puzzle you can really get into them. For example, in the McKeesport pool of the Mon, there is an underwater hump (Sorry, but I'm not at liberty to say where exactly) that is about 100 yds long. I fished that hump all day one day and pulled out 20 to 30 largemouth all decent size. to be successful on the river, fish the old bridge pilings and pretty much anywhere there is and inflow of water (near powerplants or feeder creeks).
Also, I don't fish it much but I hear that the area around the point is good. Guys always pull a few out near the Carnegie Science Center along that bank.

Hope this helps...

Do you have a boat?

Thanks for all the info Matt. Very helpful.  Yeah I have a boat.  Well it's my father in laws but it's parked in my garage so I lay claim to it.

Bigolpigs, im suprised to hear someone say the bass at mammoth is goin down, I believe its goin up. last summer i was catching atleast 7 nice sized bass there in one evening. Then you got loyalhanna were the bass are always biting, Did you try tubes or shakyheads? I got 5 one after noon this winter when the ice was just off. (caught them on crankbaits and drop shots)

Try a slug-go in the shiner color with blue or black back in shallow water pretty much in any lake that doesn't have deep rocky banks.I've had good luck for the past 10 years on it.When the water is below 55 degrees, work it slow almost letting it drop before you give it a tug.Not too fast at that temp, just enough to let it glide back and forth. You have to rig it right or it will spin and twirl on the way in,not like a real injured minnow.Water above 55,you can walk the dog back and forth all the way in.Lake Arthur is pretty good and you can get some big bass there,Cross Creek also, but most are on the smaller side since the fishing pressure is high there. If you can swing the trip there is no place in PA like Erie.Big bass and lots of them at the right time.Of course, lots of other things work in every different lake you go to depending on time of year and weather conditions. That's why the call it fishing instead of catching.

Thanks Maga and Gobyking.  Maga I'm sure you'r right about Mammoth. I'm going to try to get out there this week.  Like I said I'm new to bassin so I'm sure alot of it was me not using the right lure/technique.  I've been doing alot of crappie fishing at Loyalhanna.  I pulled a couple bass out of there but wasn't really trying for them.  If anyone does crappie fishing I've been killing em at loyalhanna.
