Man, 71, you're killing me.

I've been getting crushed at a new job and haven't been able to make it down your way nearly as much as I'd have liked this year.

PeteM,

Man! How are you doing? I was wondering why I haven't seen you on the river. Let me know when you want to fish, alot of the guys at our last outing says this time they want to fish instead of eat and drink.

Doug,

Got your message.  I'll be in touch today at some point.

When are eating them??  I might be able to to bring some cherry juice to marinate ourselves in while they cook, lol.

27ModelT,

Just so you know, I use to catch walleye like this all year around on the Yough back in 70's then something happened and started catching small ones or barely legal in the 80's, in the 90's they started to pick up size again, then early 2000's was small again, and last year, started catching 20 plus inches, but last night was the icing on the cake. It was a matter of finding them. Last year there were several 29 and 30 inches caught near West Newton and Layton. Mossy Oak's buddy pulled out a 27 inches.

2 weeks ago I ran into 4 guys that one had a 10 pounder on the stringer, it was a hawg! He told me that he lost 2 that he thought was bigger than the one he landed.

Trout are nice to catch, and catchin big smallmouth are fun, but nothing better than eating walleye in my opinion...other can disagree, their choice.

nice haul gto, on my canoe trip from hazelbakers 3 weeks ago during the 7 mile trip bout half way we got to deep slow water and we couldnt keep them from hitting our Rapala Countdown 3s  that looked like minnows. but nothing bigger then 16inches all were released i would of loved to went back with 1 of the ones you got for the camp fire. Great catch and even greats eats!

Thanks for offering the info 71, I spend a lot of time on the Yough dam and the Mon river also make it up to Erie a few times each summer, might have to start looking in some the deeper holes on the river.

Glad to see you took my advice 71GTO. lol  I knew they were in that hole.  I am going to try and sneak out one day this week early from work and come down and fish.

How where the bats!  Last time I fished that in the evening they were horrible.  MO your married again so your out of the loop.  Unless you have Cherry juice for us all!  Do you even know where the river is these days MO.

I am going to guess he caught them on crawlers.

Ax, somebody asked about where to get minnies in the area.  I know years ago I would get them at the little bait shop by the ballfield in Smithton, but they haven't had them in a long time.  Anywhere else to get them coming from 43/ I-70 area.  And early in the AM to boot.

Not real sure.  The bait shop in Smithton closed a few years ago.  Now all they have is a convience store that sometimes sells bait.  Or as I call it the inconvience store because everytime I go in there they have nothing.  Best bet is to get them and bring them with you.

I know that Shad lure in West Elizabeth has them all the time and they open around 6 AM.  Real nice guy too.  There is a little bait shop on 51 north right past brunswick the bowling center. She usually has nice bait but isnt open all the time.

Another great choice is to go to West Newton and get them.  I think the bait shop is in the Yough Canoe Outfitters.  Great guys and I am sure they have minnies.  Ask Small hook too.  He seems to always be getting minnies.

Puffy,

Only using crawlers for them, the bigger and fatter the better.

I have only dealt with 3 for shiners this year,

Betty's on RT 51, her shiners do not seem to last very long in the water.

Yough Outfitters are mutliple sizes and last a long time in the water.

Shad Lure is the place to get them, you can get some big ones and they last a long time in the water.

Don't use shiners anymore, I just go out in the garden and pluck them crawlers up.

Thanks 71.  There used to be a bait shop around Palfey's bar in West Newton also.  Not sure if it's still there.
I get crawlers at the Speer's Exxon.  Nicest around , but $3.17 a dozen if you could believe that.

I always go to "On the fly" shop for shiners. Not sure whether it is the store you are talking about.

Yeah, On the Fly is the little place at the former gas station by the ballfield.  They recently (well some years ago) quit selling shiners.  So you're saying they started again ?   Doubt they'd be open at 6 AM as it stands anyhow.

Oh, speaking of the ballfield, I was fishing near the bridge in May, and there was a group of hoodlums throwing rocks/boulders towards me from atop the bridge.  Just a bunch of early teeners getting their jollies.  I let it go for a while, then got Pizzed off and started out of the water.  They high-tailed it up the tracks.  Little varmint's.

haha on the fly is a real classy place.  i called last august to see what time they opened as i wanted to get some nightcrawlers for smallies...  he said, i dunno, just call tomorrow morning.  down there around 7am, obviously called and woke him up, came out, and unlocked the doors and pointed to an old glass door refridgerator in the back.  there were two worm containers in there, i claimed one, gave him $2 and was on my way.  ran out of bait hours later and decided it was time to just fish with flies instead of waking up the fella from his afternoon nap!

i wish tackle unlimited was open earlier, it's right on my way to the yough.

There was always a girl in there in the afternoon.  Maybe a daughter.  Never had any bait to speak of.

Raz,

If you are going past Tackle Unlimited on your way to the Yough then you drive right past Shad Lure and I know they open early.  Shad is right down the road from Tackle Unlimited.  If on Ridge Road going toward South Park make first left after crossing 51.  Follow this little road down there a ways and you will see Shad Lure on your left.  I will find out road name if you need it as I drive past it everyday coming two and from work.  Great little bait shop.  Personally I think they have nicer bait than tackle unlimited.

i used to stop there on the way to elizabeth with my dad and brother back in the day on the way to fish elizabeth barge/pier.  before there was tackle unlimited.  i do forget the way to get down there...  coming from 51 by way of century three mall, i make that sneaky little right then it winds down that way i know.  then i can follow that down into west elizabeth and back up onto 51 before the bridge.
