I'm not a mushroom expert, but, hopefully someone can identify these for me. They look like morels. Anybody positively know? Found a huge patch of them this afternoon. Thanks in advance...

PS: Real quick---any good recipes? OTH

Yup! Lucky you.

I just roll them in flour, and saute them in butter/olive oil, and garlic.

Slice them in half lengthways, and soak them in cold salt water for a few hours first. Take an onion, or similar semi-porous sack to pick them. It will help keep your patch going in future years.

Here's a few I got in a minutes worth of pickin'. I heard there are similar mushrooms to morels that are no good. Anyone know what the difference is? I'll do a google later when I get time.   OTH...

There are some with similar shape, size, and color. The difference is the surface of the head. Morels have that pock marked ( Freddy Kreuger face ) look like the ones pictured above. No pits, and pocks, no good.

Thanks Spoon.  We were picking up garbage along an unnamed town rd. and WHOOP! There they were! What a patch!

I heard for the longest time how good they are and now I'll get a chance. There's a mess of little ones poppin up. The deer dug up a mess of them, scrapes all over. Putting some some deer fencing around the area tonite so they don't get the rest. I never got into picking mushrooms because I never had anyone who knew what they were doing to show me the right ones to get.

Got to get a good beer to go with them for dinner later....(play the lottery while I'm at it!)

Thanks again for your speedy reply ad recipe! OTH

God darn squirrels and deer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never got all the deer netting up last nite as there were "people" out walking and I didn't want to give up the spot.

Needless to say, within the first hour of light this morning, the ones I left to grow yesterday were mostly gone! Deer tracks and I saw squirrels running out of there as I walked up.

They are tasty treats.   Making red potatos, porterhouse steaks, corn on the cob, and the morels smothered in butter with garlic and sweet onion on the grill tonite for supper.
