Anyone hear that Presque Isle lagoons and the Tamarack swamp are finalist in this upcoming years study in the western part of the state? A breeding pair of radio collared alligators may be transported from Florida in late May to early September for study by the United Predator Association. This, of course, is pending a PGC and PFBC approval and only one location will recieve the pair. The study will determine the amount of predation on young alligators in a controlled setting within one of these swamp areas. The group is trying to determine the amount of impact a breeding pair of alligators would have in an environment with no other competition from other alligators and birds of prey. The locations were chosen because of the caustic water quality and swamp fauna which is similar to the natural range of the American alligator. Some sticking points are: the amount of netting inserted to prevent the monitored pair from leaving the study zone, human interaction, lagoon boating elimination for the summer, public acceptance of the study The United Predator Association promotes introduction of mountain lions, pumas, alligators, all bear breeds, badgers, poisonous snakes and spiders, etc. to available areas in the US that are open-minded and pro-wildlife.
