Anyone hear that Presque Isle lagoons and the Tamarack swamp are finalist in this upcoming years study in the western part of the state?

A breeding pair of radio collared alligators may be transported from Florida in late May to early September for study by the United Predator Association. This, of course, is pending a PGC and PFBC approval and only one location will recieve the pair. The study will determine the amount of predation on young alligators in a controlled setting within one of these swamp areas. The group is trying to determine the amount of impact a breeding pair of alligators would have in an environment with no other competition from other alligators and birds of prey.

The locations were chosen because of the caustic water quality and swamp fauna which is similar to the natural range of the American alligator. Some sticking points are: the amount of netting inserted to prevent the monitored pair from leaving the study zone, human interaction, lagoon boating elimination for the summer, public acceptance of the study

The United Predator Association promotes introduction of mountain lions, pumas, alligators, all bear breeds, badgers, poisonous snakes and spiders, etc. to available areas in the US that are open-minded and pro-wildlife.

I agree that is a pretty wild experiment.  I wonder about the water temperature and winter conditions.  I would not think alligators can deal with freezing temperatures and ice.

If they eat coyotes I'm all for it!

I can see it now, "Oops, they got away" we don't need no stinking alligators!

I gee after watching that movie trailer, I wonder if we will have to start carrying shotguns when we fish Presque Isle???  Giant alligators running all over the place, people being eaten, the public in fear...  What will that do to the tourist trade?

could be wrong but i did some reading years ago about alligators/crocodiles and remember reading that as long as there is a hole to get air, alligators can live in the water all year long. awesome creatures.

I sure hope they don't introduce alligators to any waters around here.  We have enough problems with invassive species, we certainly don't need any more.  I know this is an experiment and the animals are supposed to be monitored, but even the best of plans can go off course.

They have to do something to control the coyote, mountain lion, and bigfoot population around here!

Funny, a google for "United Predator Association" doesn't get any hits except for this post.  I wonder if gobyking is doing a little trolling here?  (sorry to ruin the joke...)

Could be true it is a put up, but it sure sounds like some of the dumb stuff I have heard people would want to do.

A few years ago a kid caught a piranha in Edinboro lake.  It was concluded some genus decided to let the thing go when it got too big for his aquarium.  Not all that different from the idiots that are releasing pythons in Florida or snakeheads in Maryland.  Stupid is as stupid does.

according to the newspaper, there have been many alligators removed from the rivers including the beaver river. they get too big for an aquarium and people release them. pacu's are another one. they start out small and get huge very quickly. people release them into lakes and rivers when they get too big.

This is second hand info from a volunteer for the group who is an old colleague of mine from when I lived in Florida. He volunteers in predator studies to get hunting privledges at the founders ranch. Hunting opportunities are limited there because of all the private land owners.

I got it in an email and just passed the info along without consulting him first. It seems me posting this has created quite a stir down there in their group. The founder is a multi-millionaire who lives in Lakeland(last name Tillson) and from what I've heard is a Ted Nugent type of person. There are at least 5 other states that are involved and total pairs of the experiment are not to exceed 30, which is how many they are permitted to transport out of state by law.

I would think so... Maybe we will have to get some of the shark proof material to put over our waders...
