Hmmm...all I got on the Yough yesterday was skunked.  Apparently, I really suck at fishing

Brian: Helluva fish. I pulled a couple of bruzers out of the Yough recently myself. Usually I have my best luck catching the monsters early in the season and late in the season. The next two weeks or so are prime time for the big boys. My son hooked into one last week using a lure made from a beer bottle cap folded over with a bb in it. It went about 4 pounds. If you don't mind me asking, what did that trophy hit?

Exactly.

I've seen much larger in there, but I don't think they feed anymore once they get that big

Maybe I'm wrong.

I've seen bunches of tubes pulled between and under rocks (and busted off) this year, more than I usually do. I fish primarily between Layton and Smithton although I did spend a big chunk of time in South Connellsville this year. Not a great year, good, but not great like two years ago (07). I like to use bait on the Yough, I usually use medium fatheads but occasionally I ramp it up with big shiners or suckers. I love slingin minnies with my flyrod while wading the Yough, for me it is heaven.

I have a small digital scale I carry - no guessing is needed. Its quick, easy and the fish don't seem to mind at all.

I don't know much about fly fishing but aren't you supposed to use Flies and such?  Seems like it would make things alot easier to throw minnies with a spinning outfit!

Maybe some people don't want to do it the easiest way ?

Jeezus...tough crowd! Guy's just excited about a nice fish. I know I would, if it was mine. Fish looks like a solid 19"er, maybe even a 20. I'd say an EASY 4 lbs., maybe even a 4 1/2 if it's a 20"er. Fish could've easily been a 5 pounder if it wasn't so skinny.

I'd say an easy 15! Look...it took two guys to hold it!!  Unless they were just holding hands for that special moment together....

I tend to get a better drift using a flyrod. Maybe if I was fishing from shore but when I'm wading I can really work the holes better using a flyrod. I have four rods I use depending on the situation but my goto rod on the Yough is a four weight, four piece, Cabelas PT flyrod with a double taper floating fishing line. I tie in a four foot piece of weighted flyline into my leader and get a couple of dozen medium fatheads and head out. I fished with a spinning rod for 40 years and was looking for something new and I found it in a 9½ foot St.Croix Avid seried rod a few years ago. I strip pleanty of flies for the fun of it but if you really want to haul in fish all day, bait is the ticket on the Youghiogheny river.

You're right about that man. I was catching them on anything in 07.
Thought i had some serious skills, til I went out in 08.
