I generally always start around 5 - 6 a.m. with a small nymph, size 12 or 14. This can be anything from a pheasant tail to a prince or whatever turns my fancy. We use a fly we call a "redhead", of peacock herl, red tag and head, and black hackle. We have caught lots of fish in the dark, wearing a headlamp, with these. It is not a lot of fun tying one on, but we usually manage. Maybe it's just me, but some of the strikes that I have gotten early a.m. on a nymph or a sucker spawn have been really ripped. I have had success after the sun goes down also.

Not saying that you have alot of room on the Erie tribs for false casting. But you will be doing roll cast at night.

try swinging streamers at night, especially this time of year.  You might be surprised.

I've showed up to the stream a little early at times, even right before day break seemed hard.  I've only fly fished a few years but doing it in the dark proved frustrating.  I ended up in trees and weeds, then when you try to get a knot or tangle out that can seem impossible. Not saying it wouldn't work, I just prefer day light.

I used to get up early and throw in the dark. You need to fish in places you know well.
I never did slay them at night but streamers with glow in the dark material took a few.
Yarn eggs with glow yarn worked, too.
