Just curious why you want to try a 4 weight.

smallhook,
The rod is quite light for steel!  But that being said, , , , if you used appropriate sized leader and tippett it should be possible to land one IF:  You have enough room to really play the fish,  You have a reel with an excellent drag which you adjusted before you went to the creek,  You don't go stupid and try to fish in a crowded area, and if you have somebody to help you with a net cause I think you'll have your hands full with trying to keep the rod from breaking.   I know Bughawk caught three on a light 4wt bamboo 3 years ago.  Can you say SNAP!  But he managed it till he hooked one in fast water.  IMHO Bug is one of the better light tackle fishemen I have seen.  I'm sure there are better but he is good.

Well, I've been using a 4 wght all year on the Yough and I just fell in love with this Rod. I used a 7 wght all last year and it was perfect for Steel.

I have landed several steelie on a 4 wt.  I enjoyed the battle, but it is not the ideal.  If you want to give it a try, go for it.  My usual steelhead rod is a 10' 7 wt.  I also use a 9' 6 wt.

I use a St. Croix Ultra Legend 9'6" 4 wt.  In PA it is more than sufficient and is far and away my favorite rod with a Teton Tioga reel.  For NY and Ohio, I move up to a Loomis 9'6" 6 wt. and it does fine.  If I chase Kings, I go to the 10' Loomis 9 wt.  Both of these use Lamson Large arbors.

I have plenty of times streched the limits of what you should use a wt rod for. During early season when the steelies are still in pycho mode its not a smart idea to use a 4wt at all. During this time I will use a 6wt for the extra power. Now late fall/winer a 4wt is not a problem at all as long as the stream temps are still cold as the fish get quite a bit slugish. With all this said the largest Steelhead I ever landed was in April on walnut a 35' 15 lber on a 7'6" 4wt not buy chose but because stupid me broke the tip off my 6wt not paying attention and had to choise use the 4wt or not fish.

I fished an 8' 4wt St Croix Ultra Legend this evening.
THat particular 4 wt has a lot of backbone and I've caught some decent fish on it in the past.
But, I feel that I can only use the rod when conditions call. Low,clear, fish bowl conditions where the fish can't really go anywhere.
Those are the conditions where I can trust myself to get em in quickly.
It is not a comfortable rod to throw any kind of weighted flies or shot with.

Watched a guy on walnut last year fight a fish on a 4wt. snapped the rod right in half. It was funny but not so much for the guy. Have never really wanted to try it personally, especially after that

so - you guys would recommend a 6 wt. then?  length?  and what reel? (middle of the road $)...

I'm looking to give it a whirl this year and I'd like to start out as I said middle of the road on price...

Noodling is cool - but the fly gear looks like fun - and a new challenge...

6 or 7 wt are both good choices for steelies.  I have both 9' 6 wt and 10' 7wt.  I also have an 11' spey/switch rod I use sometimes 7-8 wt..  I have three main steelie reels, Ross Evolution, and two Lamson LiteSpeeds.

If you don't want to spend a ton of money you can buy a combo.  Check out the FishUSA tackle shop.  They have some pretty good combos.

One other thing to keep in mind is will this rod and reel be used only for steelies or will you use it for other fish.

Good luck finding the right rod and reel set up for you.

wilbur,
One of the interesting things to remember is you can usually catch a small fish on a big rod, but catching a big fish on a small rod is another matter.  For years my absolute favorite all around rod was a 6-7 wt 8'6" Ugly stick fly rod.  It was a little big for most small fish, a little small for some fish, and just right for me.  I caught everything from brookies to steelhead and largemouth bass on that rod and it is still one of my favorites.  that being said I would opt for nothing smaller than a 5-6 wt for an all around rod, and I prefer 6-7! As for a reel get one with a good drag, one that will hold all the line you are going to need for the task at hand.  And try to get one that balances the rod weight in your hand.  Fish USA has some EXCELLENT combos and if you call them they
will give you guidance in to what you will need.

Reels:  Fly Logic FLP 567   around 100 bucks, you can find them on the net for less--amazing drag system--I have landed up to 30 lb salmon with 7 wt WF-F line with this reel........big enough for steelie and small enough for trout--almost a one stop shop reel---

Reels I have also used:  Fly Logic FLO--you just can't go wrong with a Fly Logic reel---I have been using them for over 7 years and I have had only one problem and that was because a fly shop put the backing on too tight and warped the spool---Customer Service is amazing...........best I have ever used--no games

I have in the Rod Department:
9 foot 7 wt Scierra CTC, 9.5 foot 6 wt Sage VT2, 9.5 foot 7 wt St. Croix Avid--sold it ( but I have owned 3 of these rods--stolen, lost, sold--amazing steelie stick)   11 foot switch rod--Winston--Just aquired this baby--can't wait to catch a steelie on it........

You can't go wrong with a 9.5 foot 7 wt.............it will pretty much do whatever you need to do when it comes to steelies............the FLP reel will fill the bill from a 5wt line to an 8 wt line with plenty enough of backing......I use this reel on my 8wt matched to a 9 foot 8 wt GL3

Fishing with a fly rod/reel about 20 % of the time vs. noodle/spin, I've always liked my scott/bauer setup. Tried others but sure love the bauer reels & scott rods.  Oh. and Tom/Eggsac when you land a mud shark on a twig and a safteypin give me a call.  See you & Mary @ the Oak this year ?    Dave

thanks gents...

was reading thru the fly fishing section and it was a bit overwheming...

one other thing...and I know this has been brought up before....

why fly rod and not center pin? or vice-versa...

I take it that the CP is more a drift type setup and the fly set up for "whipping the water to a froth"?

sorry for hyjaking the thread...excellent advice tho...

I think it puts too much stress on the fish, but thats just my opinon. I wouldn't go less than a 6 weight. I tried my 5 wt B4 and it seemed too light also.

When I met this guy on the tribs last year he and his buddy was crushin them with noodle rods while I was stirrin up the pool with my Flyrod. I didn't catch squat in that pool that day. It was my first time fishin for steel with a flyrod and after watchin these two guys smack `em good with their noodle rods I almost wanted to go back to my car for my noodle rod. We was a long long way from the parking area though. Hopefully I'll bump into you again this year Dave and thanks for sharing your minnies with me that day.

Stick with a 7wt...unless you want to play the fish to death...

That is nonsense,  I have had many, many days where my totals have exceded my willingness to count.  Most fish are landed within three minutes and all of them within 5-6.  Never have I seen a fish that was released go back into the water and go belly up.  If that was the case, there would be steelheads lying dead all up and down every creek (like November Kings in Pulaski).  Simply, if you are not comfortable with a setup, don't fish with it... choose something else.
