I go to school downtown and now that the steelhead run is almost over, are there any places around the city to throw out a line? What can be fished for? Are catfish biting this time of year? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks a lot!

There are fish in the rivers.  Mouths of creeks, below the lock/dams, under bridges, or where ever you can get access, you'll likely find fish.  Just remember that they are flowing through an old town with a pollution problem.  Wear your waders if you plan on going in.  The shore lines drop off quick in many areas, so walk slow.  Don't wade unfamiliar water when the water is high.  Also, if it rains hard, give the rivers 2-3 days to wash the sewage overflow down stream, or you'll likely not want to ever fish them again...

The rivers should be starting to produce.  They seem to be slow fishing during the cold months, then hit their peaks in the Spring and Fall, then don't seem to fish well in the heat.  Most places seem to follow that though.  If you get used to a certain body of water, you'll figure out when and where the fish tend to go.  Then you'll buy a boat, and all of that knowledge will be stripped from your head...

Use the search key above.  Do a search of Ohio River, Allegheny, Mon, 3 rivers, river rats, Lock, ect.  You'll find a few places to start from at least.  Check out mapquest or something like that, and find some streams that dump in the river close to your house/apt.  Take a drive, or post what you are looking at hitting.  Much of the rivers are inaccessible.

If the rivers aren't your thing, check out the PFBC's fishing guide.  It will show where some lakes and streams in the region are.  There really aren't many lakes in the area, as compared to other parts of the country.  Find the name of a few, and use the search function.  You'll end up finding too many places to check out, and not enough time to hit them all.

Good luck,
PT

there are a ton of places at which you can fish.  Depends on your  transportation restricitions.  If you can not get around easily and want to go out for trout opening day, Montour run or north park lake and pine creek would probably be closest.  Like other poster stated, go to fish cmmiss web site and you'll see  all kinds of info.  Also follow posts on this web site and you'll get a bunch of info.  Easiest place in the city is just go to the point or over to clemente park on the north side.  Cats, carp, bass, maybe even a paddlefish (you have to throw these back immediately).

Caught tons of eyes and a few stripers/white bass(15 inches) this past weekend after dark.  Right outside the mouths of the creeks.  I'm sure every creek going into the river has the same concentrations of fish right now.  I shined a spotlight into the creek we were fishing next to when we were done and there were trout, walleye, bass, carp, suckers and a pile of gar all in the mouth.  I was pretty wild.  Never saw anything like it before.  Can't wait for trout season to get here so I can fish for those gar.  No huge ones, but I think they're pretty cool to catch.

Thanks for the info guys. I am from Kittanning so I will be doing some of my trout fishing back home. I am probably going to try that Montour Run this year. I didnt know if anything was biting in the river, or if there are even places on shore that you are allowed to fish from. I am pretty sure the Point is off limits even if it was open right now, which it is not.

There is a walking trail on the south shore of the Mon that goes from Station Square to around the bottom of Streets Run Road.
There a plenty of access points along the trail and it is intended for public use.
Free parking at Southside Park 18th St
Near the Hotmetal Bridge there is also metered parking near the river.

I used to work in town and would fish under the river patrol station in front of PNC Park on the Allegheny.  This is a great spot as is the entire river front walk on the North Shore.  I would throw jigs, rostertails and rapalas for smallies with great success in the spring and fall.
Good Luck.

Just took a lunch time stroll to one of my local spots.  Caught a sauger and a smallmouth.  Nothing major, but not bad for less than an hour of casting around.  I just needed to get out, with it being so nice out.  First river fish of the year for me.

jgut07;
you can fish virtuall anywhere along the river banks that you can get access to.  point park is not off limits (even though it is closed for now).   venture outdoors has weekly fishing derby during the summer.  i don't think that there is any cost.
visit their web site at the bottom.  they have kyaks to rent if you are interested.  you still did not say where you are or what kind of transportation you have available.  if you go to duquesne, just go down to the mon and throw a line in by the parking lot.  if on the other side of town, go down the mddle of the convention center (there is a path down to the river). Or go up by the old heinz plant.  there are some sunken barges up there that are a hang out for some fish.

Well your located probably within walking distance if you live in K town of the allegheny.  Some of the best pools of the river are right up stream from you.  They all produce well for mixed varities of fish including cats, walleye, smallies and muskie.  As stated the mouth of the streams dumping in are good but there are fish everywhere.

Fished downtown on Saturday for a couple of hours.  Everything is fenced off, except for the water "trail".  Fishing was slow, had a few hits and landed one skipjack.  A lot of carp hitting the surface.  I'm sure the scattered storms had something to do with that.  This week's rain will likely put the rivers back to their normal Spring conditions.

Sorry for spot burning, but it's the rivers!  Trust me, if I was destroying fish, I'd be a little less specific.

They just keep fencing everything off along the rivers.  10 years ago I could walk into a lot along the back channel of the ohio and the workers would say things like "catch a big one" or "I wish I could come too". Now everything is a fine, no tresspassing and if I do try and sneak in, I risk arrest.  JUST FOR TRYING TO CATCH FISH IN PLACES I USED to FISH EVERY DAY!!!  It is so frustrating!
I know its like that everywhere, not just on neville island.

I agree.

The three rivers have sooooooo many miles of fishable shoreline for the bank fisherman.  You just can not get to 98% of it.  The Allegheny has proven to me to be especially hard to find access.

Yeah, access is horrible.  It makes the whole scouting for new spots, rather frustrating.  I can't tell you how many times I've "went fishing" to end up driving around looking for access.  Having only a few options, pretty much means that you're likely fishing with company too.  If company is a few other guys that will cast in turn, and respect each other, and good conversation, it's a great time.  When company is three guys with 9 rods, spread out over 200 feet of already limited shoreline, then I'm pretty much forced to pack up the car and go home.  Only thing worse, is one or two of these jokers pulling up next to you and casting out, after you were already there.  One of the reasons that I bought a boat.

What can you do besides get a boat?

I mean for a long time, I thought it was me.  I thought that I was just not figuring out ways to get to the river bank.  The last couple years I realized there just isn't any legal ways to get onto most of the river banks to fish what I know will be productive waters.  And if you can get there, it's usually cliff banks covered in poison ivy.  hooray!

Plus most of the land owners think they own the shore & won't let you fish it, even though it is navigable waters .

Got poison ivy now & forgot the bleach.

Crappy, try water-weed, I think it may be  called jewel weed or something like that. It may not be out yet but it is by far the best treatment I've ever used. Had an old timer friend who was covered and medical crap did him no good and 3 days later it was gone. I would even put it in my socks over spots and it would be gone in 2 days or less. Anyone else know what I'm referring to ??

speaking of access, i tried fishing from the semi-new docks near the smithfield st bridge.  They told me I wasn't allowed.  Even though my tax dollars paid for the dang thing to be built, so they could charge people money to dock their boat there, I can't fish from it.  And the worst part is, 99% of the time the docks are almost completely empty, no boats dock there unless there's a regatta, concet or big event, which happens about 10 days a year.  It kills me!
What's a poor fisherman with no boat to do?
