Well, I just picked up the new toy.... a 6/7 Beulah Switch and have had everything Spey on my mind for quite some time now.  From what I understand swinging isn't the way to hit a 50 fish day, but it sure seems fun as hell...

Since I can't swing clipped yarn and expect to get any Steel, I had a go at some Spey flies.  Here is my first attempt.  I understand that transluecence is key along with movement and contrast.  So I wrapped the shank w/ silver tinsel (not very visible in pics) for transluecence and went with marabou and Schlappen for the movement and black and blue for the contrast.

We'll call it The Black and Blue...  Think it'll work?

Purdy!  I need more colors of Schlappen, really fun to work with...  May I ask how you're fishing yours?  Shot on the leader or a sink-tip?  I have yet to find a great way to catch winter fish in those wide tailouts, but I think this should do it.  I wanna see one smash it in that clear winter water.

I don't have the best memory......but I should be able to keep track of the rod...

I tied a bunch of the same kind of pattern a few weeks ago.  Same as you did, apparently.  Silver body, estaz thorax to give some flashy bulk underneath and at the same time keep a cigar shaped head.  solid colors, purple, orange, black.  And two marabou feathers of contrasting colors wrapped simultaneously, purple/chartreuse, pink/white, purple/black, orange/white, pink/purple, etc.  I had hits/caught fish on orange/white, purple/chartreuse & purple/black.

I'm just swinging it like any other streamer, with a few split shot in front a foot or so.  I'm not about to mess with spey rods and fancy leaders, too much hassle for PA tribs, IMO.  A couple fish snapped 3x tippet like it was 6x though.  Really strong hits.

I was fishing mostly faster water, but tailouts would probably be good too.  It doesn't take much current to keep those flies moving.  They were an experiment for me and I was surprised how well they worked.  Especially when my buddys were all laughing at me tying them up.  I got the last laugh for sure.

Search google for "alaskabou".  You'll find a bunch of color combos.

Great, I'm just gonna whip up a bunch and see what they like.

Funny you say "I'm not about to mess with spey rods and fancy leaders", while I'm LOOKING for new stuff to mess with...

That's cool.  I'd just rather spend my dough on gas to go fishing than on more rods and reels.  At least living where I live, that is.  Now, if I lived an hour from the Catt it'd be a different story.

And kjh is right, water's cold duUd.

Wasn't really paying attention to line wt., just felt a couple and the action on the 6/7 was noticably smoother/more moderate.  It felt good and will be great for tippet protection and lobbing heavy rigs w/ shot and indies.  7/8 was stiffer and too heavy.  It's a 10' 6" and doesn't feel like it will be a hindrance at all.  Can't wait to get out with it.

Good point w/ the cold water.  I'll try it right in their face, otherwise i'll just hang out in high-sticking heaven till spring.

That would be where I benefit from having a job and no living expenses I suppose...

The popsicle in the Erie streams D-nymph....huh, I never even though to try it. MGolf92, our last pic of the olive/black will without a doubt work. Quarter down and put it right in front of their face, and if you dont get a strike, i will personally dive in and let you throw at me.

~On a side note, I have a 5wt 11.6ft switch that i use quite a bit. It is a blast to play around with on bigger water days.

I own a Beulah 10.5 foot 9/10 switch that I use for salmon---freakin' thing is awesome and that is with Rio Salmon/steelhead line.........mostly nymphing, but swinging stuff also..next year I am going to have Bruce at Beulah custom cut me a line...........he said I will be able to launch grocery baskets with the line he makes!!!!

Now, I have an 11 foot Winston BIIX 7 wt SWITCH with Beulah elixer fly line on it.........use airflo poly leaders and wala.............Swing away..........casts like a beast .............love this set up...............overkill for Erie tribs....but I love to use it on the Salmon River..............the switch rod really helps with my messed up shoulders.....

welp.......I have tied up a bunch of flies for Erie use.................now I will tie up some pop's and swing away.......

mgolf92,

Those flies will most definitely work when the fish are in the mood for spey flies.  I went over to the darkside a few years ago with a 11 foot custom spey rod and discovered the power of the darkside.  Swinging spey flies is one use of the spey rod on the creeks in Erie.  A spey rod can be used to do some fine nymphing as well.

Just a little of a week ago I stopped by the Presque Isle Ultimate Angler and laid down some change for a Beulah 7/8  wt surf rod and lined up my Lamson Lightspeed with a running line and shooting head.  The rod is a canon and with just a few practice casts I was putting the line out an easy 50 to 75 feet.   The rod has the potential to flip a line out to over 100 feet.  I have not taken it out to fish yet, but I am hoping to get out to the creek mouths soon and see what this bad boy will do.
