I been interested in getting one, where can I get a one without spending hundreds of bucks. I always try to get the best I can afford, but the prices I've seen on these are pretty high, any chance of getting a rod & reel combo for under $100 ?

I was also recently looking around for a cp outfit and the cheapest place for a okuma sheffield reel that i found was $179 i believe at gander mt. Okuma does make a cheaper model the advanta that was about $30 less. From there you can go up to $600 just for a reel.

For a rod a found a 12 foot crappie rod also from gander that was $40. I compared it to a 13 foot long sheffield rod that was priced at $199 and the rods had a similar bend/flex to them. I went ahead and bought it and on the 2 trips i made with it the 25 steelhead i landed didn't seem to care that it was a crappie rod. At no time did i feel overmatched but the biggest fish may have been 25 inchs. We'll see how it does next year. It came with a year guarantee and they said i could return it if i didn't like it.

I am also satisfied with the sheffield reel.

It can't really be done for under a 100.  The okuma has the cheapest reel and its right around 110 plus rod backing line etc.  Your better off to look around and find something decent cause if you do actually catch an interest in it your going to want something better then what you got.  My 2 cents.....

Do you attach backing like you do on a fly outfit, whats your main line, mono ? How do you cast ? Can I fish a cp reel on a flyrod or noodle ?

I put 50 yards of 80? pound dacron catfish line as backing and 75 yards of trilene xt solar as a main line. There is a better line for a cp. which is siglon and probably others but several sites recommended using cheap line till i got the casting line down.

I can't cast very far yet but i was able to cover most parts of elk on the two trips i made. If you check out flyandfloatfishing.com or quest.com they can tell and show you a lot about the casting process. I've had many tangles while trying to cast to date but i've never had to cut the line yet. I think the trilene xt being pretty stiff helps with the untangling process.

Hopefully some of the guys that know a lot more about a c.p. will chime in but so far i like it. There are usually some cheap ones on ebay from the ukraine and one called blackfish but i don;t think they are much good but i could be wrong.

One thing you need to learn quick is that there is no drag and if you forget to put the clicker on to hike etc. you can get a ton of line off the reel in a hurry.

Typically the clickers aren't strong enough to hold.  slide a hair scrunchie up the handle to the reel foot.  When going mobile, stretch it to one of the handles on the reel.

you can put it on a noodle rod or any rod,the problum will be balancing it.they do get heavyafter a long day,but has always been worth it.Don't skimp on the cost, the Okuma Sheffield can be found for less than 300,and well worth it. I use mine all the time, very versital and deadly way to fish.Flyandfloatfishing.com,all your answers are there.

I bought an Okume Sheffield in 2006 after reading reviews on Quest.com My opinion is for the money, it is the way to go. I am addicted to pin fishing and I am now looking to make another purchase. Don't know which way I will go, but the Sheffield is the perfect real for beginners or for those who do not fish often.
